The terrible images coming from Ukraine since the start of the conflict have led us all to wonder how we can help. For now, the best way to help is to donate money to one of the recognised appeals, such as the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC).
Every donation of money will help the 15 leading aid charities working under the DEC banner to directly help people in need on the ground in Ukraine and Eastern Europe. Every pound donated will be matched by the UK Government up to £20 million.
At this stage of the crisis donating money is more useful than donating goods. There are many logistical challenges around the distribution of donated goods, but money can be used to help people in need on the ground immediately.
Over the coming weeks and months, it may be that appeals will be made for specific items but now please help by donating to this or another recognised appeal.
Edinburgh’s TSI partnership is working with local community planning partners and is in contact with Edinburgh based organisations such as Edinburgh Ukrainian Club and the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Scotland to provide what ever support is needed now and over the coming weeks. Edinburgh TSI Partners; Volunteer Edinburgh, EVOC and Edinburgh Social Enterprise will continue to provide information on how you can help on their websites and social media.
Many people have been offering time to organisations like the Edinburgh Ukrainian Club. You can find out if they need volunteer help by following them on Facebook. Volunteer Edinburgh can also help connect you to other organisation in Edinburgh who need volunteers.
In the coming months Edinburgh will become host to refugees from the Ukraine. Many of the Edinburgh organisations working now with refugees will be looking for additional support, both financial and volunteering. Edinburgh TSI partners will continue to support and promote any appeals, including for volunteers as things develop.
